If money lands in your account after an online purchase, it is normal to wonder whether that counts as income and whether it belongs somewhere on your tax return. For most private shoppers the answer is calmer than expected. What follows is a plain description of how cashback is usually looked at in Austria and Germany, and why not every payment from a cashback site is treated the same way. Before the tax question makes sense, it helps to know the mechanics. When you reach a shop through a cashback portal and buy something, the shop pays the portal a commission for that referral, and the portal passes a part of it on to you. Nothing is added to your price. So the money you receive is not a payment for work you did. It is tied directly to a purchase you made with your own money.<\/p>\n\n
For a private person buying things for private use, cashback is usually placed in the same category as a discount. The reasoning is simple: you paid a price, you got part of it back, and in the end the item cost you less than the sticker said. Because of that, it is commonly understood as a reduction of the purchase price rather than as income you earned. In the regular case that means there is nothing to declare, in Austria as well as in Germany.<\/p>\n\n
That is the general reading of an ordinary situation, not a rule that fits every life. If your case is unusual, or the amounts are large enough that you would not want to guess, ask someone qualified.<\/p>\n\n
If you are self-employed or buy through a company, the purchase is handled differently from the start, because the cost is booked as a business expense. A rebate that lowers what the purchase really cost you will normally have to be reflected in that bookkeeping too. That is an accounting question rather than a private income question, and whoever prepares your books should know about it.<\/p>\n\n
Cashback sites often pay something when you tell friends about them. Our own referral programme runs over seven levels and pays 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1 and 1 percent of the commission we earn from the people in your circle. The difference that matters is that this money is not connected to a purchase of yours. Nobody reduced the price of anything you bought. It arrives because other people were active, which is why such amounts are discussed differently from cashback on your own orders.<\/p>\n\n
