Why cashback gets declined and how to avoid it

Cashback looks simple from the outside. You start at a cashback site, you buy something, and weeks later an amount lands in your account. Most of the time that is what happens. Sometimes the purchase never shows up, or it shows up and is later marked as cancelled. Some of those reasons you can fix, others sit with the shop.

How a purchase gets counted

When you click through to a shop, the affiliate network stores a small marker in your browser recording who sent you. We work through networks such as Awin, CJ Affiliate, Impact and the eBay Partner Network. If it is intact when you order, the shop reports the sale and pays a commission, part of which we pass back to you. If it is missing or overwritten, nothing is reported and there is nothing to share.

The order does not survive

This is the most common reason and the one you can do least about. If you cancel, if the shop cancels because an item is out of stock, or if you send the goods back, the sale no longer exists and the commission is reversed. Return two of three items and the amount shrinks to what you kept. It often shows as pending first and flips to cancelled weeks later. It is also why confirmation takes 30 to 90 days, longer for travel.

Another site got the credit

Almost all networks pay on the last click: whoever sent you to the shop most recently before checkout gets the sale. If you click through, then open a tab to hunt for a code and click a link on another coupon site, that site has taken your cashback. An extension that applies a code at checkout does the same, and so can a forgotten tab from yesterday.

So choose the code before you leave, and take it from the page you started on, so code and cashback belong to the same click. Close other tabs for that shop and finish in the tab that opened from the link, in one session, rather than parking the basket and paying three days later. Markers expire too, so a purchase days later may not count.

Your browser blocks the handover

The marker is a cookie, so anything blocking cookies blocks cashback. Ad and tracking blockers often strip affiliate links, rejecting everything in a cookie banner can remove the marker you just collected, and private mode discards it when the window closes. If you tap the link on your phone and the shop app takes over, the purchase happens where the cookie cannot reach. Allow cookies, pause the blocker for that shop, and stay in the mobile browser.

Rules inside the shop

Shops set their own conditions. Paying with a gift card, store credit or points often means no commission, because from the shop’s side no new money came in. Buying gift cards is excluded almost everywhere, and some shops exclude categories such as tobacco, medicines or tickets. On marketplaces, goods from third party sellers may not count.

A routine that avoids most of it

• Pick the voucher code first, from the page you start on.
• Close other tabs for that shop before you click through.
• Allow cookies, pause blockers, skip private mode and the app.
• Rebuild the basket after the click if it was already filled.
• Pay in one go, not with a gift card or store credit.

Even done perfectly, a small share of purchases never tracks. Servers drop requests, shops report late, networks lose data. Keep the order confirmation and note when you clicked through, since that is what a claim for a missing purchase needs. Remove the avoidable reasons and treat cashback as a discount that usually arrives.
